Kapiti Nursery and Landscapers Ltd is a family owned and operated business, conveniently located forty minutes north of Wellington at Otaihanga. We specialise in native New Zealand plants grown to the highest of standards and quality, at very competitive prices.
90% of our plants are sourced from the Wellington region, which means they're already well used to the Kāpiti climate and growing conditions — well hardened off at the time of sale, and ready to happily grow in your garden. All our plants are propagated and/or grown on right here at the nursery.
Though our main focus is natives, we keep popular ornamentals in stock too, so every gardener leaves with what they came for. Come and talk through your plans with our experienced staff — or we can come to you. Planning, landscaping and planting: in effect, a one-stop shop for the whole garden.
Our logo is based on Moriori rākau momori — living tree engravings. These taonga are internationally rare: only around fifty remain on kōpi (karaka) trees on Rēkohu, the Chatham Islands, where before 1835 more than a thousand could be found. Many are portraits — possibly of loved ones who have passed — drawn in a lively, asymmetrical style.
We use this image with the blessing of the Hokotehi Moriori Trust, the representative body for Moriori, and we stress that any reproduction of Moriori art requires Hokotehi's sanction — these images are Moriori intellectual and cultural property.
Why this mark? Because a great-great-great grandmother of this family was Moriori, from the Chatham Islands. She married a whaler, left Rēkohu, and settled in Napier — where she changed her name to Maryanne, and the family's Moriori origins were hidden for generations. Only now have we been able to explore that heritage. We carry this image out of respect for Maryanne, and we thank the Hokotehi Moriori Trust for allowing us to use it.
Me rongo — in peace.
